Meiland Discussion Questions from Group 5 (Pgs 27-31)

Choose one question to respond to, or you can respond to what someone else has posted:

1. On page 27, line 24, Meiland writes, "some students do not ask enough questions in class because the are intimidated by their teachers." Have you ever felt "intimidated" or threatened by your teachers? How were you able to ask your questions in this case?

2. Meiland says that no question is really stupid, but that "you may still feel that your questions are 'stupid' and this inhibits you from asking them" (pg 28, line 22). Do you agree that no question is "stupid"? Have you ever hesitated from asking questions because you thought they were "stupid"?

3. Meiland says that teachers learn much in the classes they teach (pg 29, line 28). Have you ever felt that teachers have learned from their students? What do think they can "learn" from us?

  1. [2] Meiland said that no question is really stupid. I can understand this, but I don't think so. However that situation is not good for students when they learn because students can acquire many things by thinking critically by themselves. They need to consider something every time.
Meiland also that students may still feel that their questions are 'stupid' and this inhibits them from asking. I have experienced like this everytime. I can understand it is not like that, but anyway, I am afraid of asking in front of my classmates because I don't have confidence. However, I became to think positively to ask questions since I read Meiland's text.

  2. [1]Sometimes I feel "intimidated" by my teachers when I ask the question. I think my question is common knowledge and I afraid of teachers think that "this student did not listen to my lessons." I think my question is stupid and I often think I do not want to my teacher feel let down. But when I have some questions, do not ask teachers is more bad. According to Meiland, teachers want us to ask question and they wait to be asked questions. So I do not need to be intimidate teachers.

  3. Thank you for your early comment, Kanako.
I understand your position, and I agree with you. I also experienced to hesitate to ask in front of my classmates because of a lack of confidence. However, anyway, we, students must make the most of our time in class like Meiland said. So, I also think that thinking positively is important for us.

  4. Thank you for your comment,Aika.
I can understand what you want to say. Even thought you feel intimidated by your teachers, you will try to ask questions to them. I agree with you.I think this action is very important.

  5. [3]I have ever felt that teachers have learned from their students. In general, teachers are not more active than age of fleshman because they teach same content to a lot of students according to their class every year. In addition to that, as being old, the brain of people intends not to activate to consider of many things. So In fact, when teachers seek to answer their questions and students answer that, I often experience that techers surprise at students' opinion and say " I dont notice that suggestion. Your idea is very nice and attractive." I think that teachers learn from us the spirit which seek to solute their problems and so on, because teachers are not perfect person.

  6. Ryusuke, are you saying I am old and that my brain is dead?! (><)

  7. [2] I agree with Meiland. There no stupid questions because of two reasons. One reason is the viewpoint from students. The students have almost always less knowledge and experience than their teachers. It includes the risk. How the students think critically by themselves, it may mislead them into wrong direction. Therefore, it is reasonable for students to ask their teachers any question. Another reason is the viewpoint from teachers. As mailand says, the teachers are continuing their study. So they have to face any question seriously. Critical thinking are needed not only students but also teachers. In conclusion, how the students' question seems stupid, actually it is not stupid.

  8. Mr. Chris, I am so sorry to make you misunderstand my opinion. I did not intend to mention such a thing. You are very smart!! and I have learned a lot of things from you!! I intended to say that there are a lot of students in university and they have a lot of background as much as teachers admire, so I think that teachers have learned from their syudents through communication.

  9. [2]I agree with Mailand. If we ask question, the teacher should talk another about the lectuer. We can understand deeply.Further, the teacher say, "Your questions help other students though any questions." Acutually, I always notice many things from the questions of other people.
I know the anxiety when asking the question in class. However but if we do not ask question,we should waste the good chance. I think we should screw up our courage.

  10. [2]I agree with Meiland's opinion, but I could not think my question is not stupid sometimes in high school.
When I want to ask a question, I worry about everystudent know this answer because teather has already said or the answer is in text book.
that is why I hesitate questioning.

I can understand some questions help other students who can not comprehend same points, but questioning in fornt of many students need confidence, I think.

  11. [2]I agree with Meiland. All our questions, even if some of them seem 'stupid', are priceless feedback and help teachers improve their classes. Although I know that hesitating to question is the most stupid thing, I'm so shy that I always hesitate to question... I have to change myself above all.

  12. Ryusuke, don't worry. I actually thought your comment was funny because it is often TRUE. Some professors think they have very little to learn from their students, which is unfortunate. I think I would stop being a teacher if I were no longer challenged intellectually by my students. Learning from my students is one of the reasons I love my job so much.

  13. [2]I do not think that no question is stupid.
I think that students do not always have questions about their topic.
However, as Meiland says, it is important for all students to have questions.
I sometimes hesitate to question teachers because I worry about if my question is beside the point. But it is wrong not to ask teachers though we have questions, so I want to try to do them without hesitation.

  14. [1]I remember that I studied at KUMONSHIKI when I was an elementary school student. In the class, my teacher basically didn't accept student's questions. I felt that her behavior was intimidating for me at that time. So, I had to try to think how to solve and try to find the answer on my own. But, now I think these process were important to creat thinking skill. When I wanted to ask a question in this case, I tried to think and get an answer for my own part before I went to ask. Of course it is vital to ask a question without hesitating, but, trying to solve a problem by my self is also importance, I think.

  15. Thanks, Fumi.
I see your point, and your opinion has new a viewpoint for me. I couldn't think of this kind of thinkig. I thought you meant critical thinking causes many viewpoints. I think so too. I agree that viewpoints of both students and teachers are important for classes.

  16. Thanks, Akari.
I have almost the same opinion with you. I also think it is anxious to ask questions in the class. But, I agree that students should make the most of their precious time. I try to do it!!!

  17. Thanks, Yoshimi.
I also think it needs confidence to ask question in the class, so I like ICU study style. "Tutorial" is good opportunity to ask questions without hesitating. But, I noticed that asking questions in front of classmates is more important to help each other in the class than asking personally. I learned it from Meiland and your comment, thank you.

  18. [2] Sometimes I hasitate to ask question because I think my question may be stupid. Some stupid questions may mean the questions which are not connected to the topic. But if students have a question when they listen to teacher's talk, the question must be connected to the topic. So I think there is no stupid question. If you are ashamed to ask your quesion in front of everyone, you can ask after class or ask your friends. The worst thing is doing nothing in spite of having a question. That is for nodody.

I always hesitate to ask questions too... And, I also understand it wastes good chances. So, I want to change myself too. ELP class consists of a small number of people, and now, we are friends, and we know each other well. I think we can be more aggressive without hesitating than before.

  20. Thanks, Ayumi.
I see your opinion, and I feel your way of thinking is a new type for me. I hesitate to ask questions when I don't know wether I can understand the content of the subject or not. But, you have a different experience from me. I can get the new viewpoint from your comment, thank you. Anyway, we should ask questions whatever we want to know about the subject.

  21. Thanks, Ryusuke.
Your opinion is very interesting, and it is much to the point. Young people's ideas are different form adult's ideas, I think. Their ideas discover a new point of view,so teachers are stimulated by students. At the same time, students learn various things which they don't know from teachers which experience various things. It is also true that better than a tortoise shell is the wisdom of age(the wisdom tha comes from experience is precious).

  22. Thank you, Kana.
I could understand your point. Your felt intimidated from your teacher in Kumon but this experience created your thinking skill. I think that trying to find the answer before asking the questions are important too.

  23. I see Meiland`s point and I agree with him. I think asking questions is one of important factors for active learner. Askint something means that the student want to know somethin and to understand the subjects more deeply. So, teachers should understand students` eargerness for learning and anser questions in their faith.
I have hesitated to ask question to my ELP teacher many times because I was afraid of being disgusted by teachers. In addition, I assumed that the other section mates already know the answer and I was the only students who could not understand. So, I did not want to humiliate myself. However, I came not to hesitate to ask something because I recognize that asking something unclear is not shameful act. It connets to develop myself.

I have the same feeling with you. I usually hesitate to ask questions, but I do not want to ask questions all time. We should break our shell in order to improve our ability.

  25. I made a mistake.
I change the sentence from "I do not want to ask questions" to "I do not want to hesitate to ask questions."

  26. {3}I think teachers learn much in the classes they teach, so I agree with Meiland's position. More teachers experience a lot of things from students' idea or opinion, more teachers find new things or idea. It is posible for students to have better idea than teachers's idea. And through discuss with students teachers can think deeply.
