Meiland Discussion Questions from Group 1 (Pgs 3-7)

1. Meiland said that intellectual work in college is a "new type of work" (p 1-5 line 2). Do you think this is true? How is it the same?

2. On page 1-4 line 27, Meiland writes "In fact a large part of college work consists of discussing and examining the basis of current beliefs." Do you think it's possible to have these important class discussions even in large college classes, like with 50 or more students?

3. Some "high school teachers treat their materials in a college manner" (p 1-6, line 1). Did you feel this was so when you were in high school? Did any of your high school teachers teach like college professors?

  1. [2]I think certainly that it is possible to have these important class discussions in large college classes. Teachers of large college classes should divide the pupils into some groups. As the result of that they are able to discuss in a small way. In fact, globalization and society class I have taken now has more than 100 students. In spite of that, the teacher of the class divide them into groups of three or four people. Then, The teacher often make them do discussion and exchange their opinions with the teacher and students of other groups in class. Though objective opinion, the class affects my basis of beliefs.

  2. Ryusuke, thank you for your good comments. So your answer is "yes" about the question 2. I can understand your opinion because you showed what you experience actually.

  3. [2] I agree with Ryusuke, because I have the same experience. In my case, the teacher of The World of Literature prepare the chance to debate in the same way. After we debate with some students, we dicide our leader and announce our result of a debate to all students and the teacher. I think the teacher wants students to inform something new to stimulate his thought, and he waInt to know how students understand his language. In fact, the teacher asks leaders many questions to get students' ideas.

  4. I want to respond to question 3.
My answer is yes. My Japanese professor in my high school always inquired students opinions. She had not presented us as if her thought were absolutely and eternally true. Therefore, there was a teacher like college professors in my high school.

  5. [3]I agree with Mai. Becaus teachers in high school wait questions from students too. My high school teachers seem to happy when the students ask questions. Bad in most high school, teachers have to teach their subject to prepare for the unversity entrance examination, so they do not have time to discusson. I think there are many teachers who want to treat materials in college manner.

  6. Q3 I didn't feel that most my high school teachers treat their materials in a college manner. But I think it is not bad thing. In my high school, instead of having discussion, I learned knowledge, how to think logically, and so on. These are basic skills for studing in college. College study may fail to succeed if the study is not based on these skills. I think it is effective that high school teachers and college teachers take different teaching style.

  7. [3]My answer is No.In my high school, students need not to discuss own ideas but to memorize knowledges.
I agree with fumi's opinion.High school student need to learn to basic knowledge. It is very important, because if they do not have basic knowledge they maybe can not understand lecture in college and discuss thier opinions.

  9. I agree with Akari. In addition, I think high school teachers are NOT free to teach because of the teaching guidelines made by Monbukagakusho(the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology). So, even if most high school teachers want to treat their materials in a college manner, they don't have any time to spare.

  10. [1]I think it is true. In university, students need examination and evaluation on materials. But in high school, these works won't be done so much.
If these works aren't done in university, the difference between university and high school will be smaller. But I think these works are necessity for university because they make university education quality higher than high school's.

  11. Thank you for your comment, Mai.
In my high school, there were no teachers like college professors so I thought most teachers didn't treat their materials in a college manner. But I understood there are some teachers like college professors.

  12. Q2 My answer is NO. I feel the content of learning in college is different from that in high school by far. When I was in high school, almost all teachers taught us something from text book. In addition, teachers managed to teach the contents that they should teach by examinations. My japanese History teacher said `I want you to know about Japanese Histoty deeply, and I want to teach a lot of things to you .However, I have to follow teaching guideline.` I think many high school teachers can not treat their materials in college manner.

  13. I am happy about your responding, Akari. Your opinion is "High school teachers can not always teach the students like college professors because they should teach the subject for the university entrance examination.", isn't it? If I misunderstood, please tell me more. Thank you for your comment.

  14. My comment is same Kanako saying. High school teachers want to do many things, but they are prevented by teaching guideline like Hinako`s comment.

  15. Q2 I didn't feel so when I was a high school student. In my high school, teachers want their students to pass the entrance examination. Teacher's goal is leadind students to success in exam. They taught students many useful things for exam, so they didn't have time to get students' own opinipn and think about it.

  18. Thank you for your comment, Yoshimi.
I think it is important to learn basic knowledge as you said. May be college students can understand lectures through basic knowledge like high school study.

I noticed an important thing through your opinion.
I could understand this question in detail.

  20. [1]I think this is true. When I was a high school student, my way to study was just memorization. But,in collge, I think we are required new types of interectual work because we have to not only memorize but also think critically. Therefore,we should not study just to memorize answers, but think critically.

  21. I am pleased about your comment, Ayumi.
Is your opinion "Students do more exam in university than high school."?
If it is so, I could know a different experince from my experience.
    Thank you.

  22. I am thankful to Hinako for responding. Did you answer Q2? I felt your answer was that of Q3, but I could understand your orinion. Maybe I also know that Japanese history teacher. He was a good teacher.

  23. Sayaka, thank you for your nice comment. Your opinion is that high school teachers do not have time for discussion because they must teach for the entrance exam. However, such useful things for the exam are also important for high school students.

  24. Kana, I have waited for your comment. Almost all high school students should study by memorization. Thinking critically means interectual work, doesn't it? Thank you.

  25. (1) I think this is true. There three reasons. First, we must apply basic materials which we learn when we were high school students to specific materials. Second, we must think critically about materials which were taught by professor even if they are obvious beliefs. Finally, we must state our opinion in presence of others. Terefore, we are required skills which are different from high school's learning.
