Meiland Discussion Questions from Group 3 (Pgs 12-17)

Choose one question to respond to, or you can respond to what someone else has posted:

1. Meiland said "Basing belief on good reasons discovered in cooperative discussion with others helps to make us the persons that we want to be and to produce the type of society in which we want live" (p14 lines 10-13). Do you think it is true or not? How do you define "cooperative" discussion with others?

2. According Socrates, "Then true opinion is as good a guide to correct action as knowledge...right opinion is not less useful than knowledge" (p14 line 30-32). Do you agree with his comment? What do you think the difference is between "true" and "right"?

3. Meiland said that if we do not have the good reasons or justification for our beliefs, we soon change our mind about the beliefs (p15). Do you agree or disagree with his opinion? Are we always changing our mind about beliefs? As college students, is having the good reasons or justification always necessary for keeping our beliefs?

  1. [3]I agree with this opinion. When we do not have good reason we accept the opinion of other
usually, because we can not oppse that. I think
the college students should have good reasons about their opinion. If they do not have that, it is defficult for them to claim their opinion
    in discussion.

  2. [3]I agree with Socrates's comment.
I think "true" means are universality and fixedness so true opinion is important thing to correct action as knowledge. But "right" is more important than knowledge because whole society consider that right opinion is pertinent. I think it is the difference between true and right.

  3. [3]I agree with Akari. If we can not explain why we believe, we might be changed our mind from other people who had a good reasons. I think that college students should have good reasons because students should be critical in the university and they ask others the good reasons. However this does not match if these students do not have good reasons for their believes.

  4. [2]I think that true opinion means supported by people and authority, and right opinion means supported by good reasons. For example, in middle age, people believed that the god created human being. But Darwin claimed that apes evolved into human. In this case, I think people's opinion is true opinion, and Darwin's opinion is right opinion, although I don't know whether Darwin's opinion is really right. Right opinion often turns to be true because of its power of evidence, so I think that right opinion is more important than true opinion. But when advocates of right opinion are minority, they are always under danger as Socrates was killed.

  6. [3] I do not agree with his opinion because sometimes there are some beliefs which it is difficult to change soon. Surely, it is important to change the beliefs if we find more good or justified reason. However, the beliefs which have long history such as tradition or culture, or the beliefs which each of us have learned by our parents since we were children can not change easily, I think.

  7. [3]I agree with Kanako.
Certainly,it is true that good reaspons are important support for beliefs. However, it is hard to say that every beliefs can change soon if there are no good reasons. There are many beliefs which are accustomed to people like traditions.I think these beliefs can not be changed so easily.

  8. [Q1]I agree with Meiland's opinion. I think cooperative discussion is a discussion which people uses to try to persuade others that their opinion is best and show thier opinion is supported by good reason. In this discussion, people would show thier ideal, I think.
I want to define cooperative discussion as that I wrote above. For example, city council and meeting in company.

I do not have confidence in my answer.I want to read other's answer.

  9. [2] I agree with Socrates. I think that true opinions are based on good rational reasons. On the other hand, right opinions are supported by moral and authority. For example, suppose that there are no cars when you(a walker) are waiting for traffic lights' turning from red to green. It is true that you will not be injured by ignoring a traffic light and no one will not be in trouble because of you, in addition you will be able to save time. However, breaking traffic rules is not right obviously. In society, it is not always right or helpful to follow true opinions. But it is also certain that right opinions are often conservative and that only true opinions can make paradigm shifts. In short, both "true" and "right" are important!! So, I think what Socrates said is correct.

  10. [3]Meiland said that the belief which has no good reasons is changed soon, and he also said to defend one's belief with good reason is important. I almost agree with him, because students must need good reasons to explain why he/she believes it. But, in some case such as religeous things, I think it is okay to have no reasons. Also, in this case, having reasons is not needed. Because, many people may not be able to explain why he/she think that there is god or not. Actually, I cannot explain that.

  12. Thank you for your comment, Kanako and Ayumi.
Your opinion is fresh idea for me,and your challenge to Meiland`s opinion with using words `tradition`,`cluture` is to the point.

  13. Thank you for your answer, Yoshimi! I almost agree with your answer. However, a part of your opinion that "discussion which people uses to try to persuade others that their opinion is best and show thier opinion is supported by good reason" make me the impression that the opinion one thinks defeats others opinion. In my opinion, cooperative discussion define that they discusses one thing with spending a lot of time and compounds with their opinion for good direction. What do you think about my opinion?

  14. I'm glad to see your comment,Yosuke.Your example is very nice to understand. You said both "true"and "right" were impotant. There are many true things and right things in our society. so, we have to distinguish the two things proprely and then we should take action like following the rule of the road, haven't we?

  15. [2] I think right opinion includes some true opinion. Right opinion is the opinion that people think it's true regardless of having a good reason or not. Some right opinions which have a good reason or justification can be true opinion based on the good reason. So, a good reason is important for us to distinguish true opinion from right opinion.

  16. (3) I belive in ghosts but I don't have good reasons for my own belief. No one can prove that ghosts exist in the real world. On the other hand, no one can prove that ghosts don't exist in the real world. There are many things which no one know. There are not good reasons. When we face with the problems like that, we can judge freely whethr it is true or not. And we should accept every thought each other.

  17. {3}I agree with his opinion.
I think people do not always heve good reasons, and often change their opinion. However, I think more change their opinion, more approach their own good reason. Experience makes peple grow up. I think it is also important for people to change their belief.
